Europe and Back by Rev. Dave Andrus

The days leading up to our departure were full and frantic. We would be gone for two weeks but we had to get things ready for Esther who would come and care for the kids. What a wonderful lady she is. She is like a loving grandma to our kids.

The flights from St. Louis to Newark and Newark to Oslo were long but uneventful. We tried to sleep, but weren’t very successful.

In Oslo, we went through passport control, then walked down a very long hallway to the other end of the airport, where we picked up our baggage and went through customs. Then we sat and waited for our contact from the Norwegian group for the blind. We waited and wondered and waited and dozed and waited. After about five hours, she finally came. She and the Norway group had a bus and were picking up others who were going to the conference. We followed her to the bus and got on.

The two-hour bus trip took us out of Oslo into the countryside of Norway and into rural Sweden, to the retreat center Va'gsjo'fors. Debb commented that all the pictures and images of Norway and Sweden were there: colorful houses, well-kept farms, birch trees, evergreens, lakes, even moose.

The retreat center was in a rural setting, just outside the small picturesque town of Tormsby. It consisted of a large old white “house,” which contained the office, twelve guest rooms, a large dining room, and several lounges; several “barns,” which held more guest rooms and large meeting rooms; several cabins; and long walking trails through prairie, woods, and lakeside.
